Ice station Aranda
Taken on 5th March 2016, this image shows scientists working at one of the daily ice camps established during the Aranda Sea Ice 2016 research cruise in the Gulf of Bothnia. Each morning, the ship would lodge and securely anchor itself in an ice floe, and the science teams would disembark the ship with their equipment to make measurements. This included measuring the ice thickness, snow layer properties, the ocean under the ice, the ice strength, laser scans of the ice topography and much more. Researchers from the Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling, UCL Earth Sciences, joined the cruise to study the interaction between radar waves and the sea ice pack in support of the European Space Agency CryoSat-2 mission. This earth-orbiting radar mission measures sea ice thickness to better understand polar climate and climate change (the sledge-based radar can be seen in the right of this image).
