The Pensive Lion
Many children who immigrate with their families to the UK learn to speak English before their family. Consequently, they become young interpreters and translators for family, friends and the local community. Their help can be invaluable in institutional settings like the doctors, banks, shops and at school. The little boy in this photo belongs to a Young Interpreter scheme in his school, where he volunteers to act as a young interpreter and buddy for newly arrived pupils. On this day we were celebrating his, and lots of other young interpreters' endeavours, using arts-based workshops to study 'A Young Interpreter's journey'. This was part of a collaboration between Hampshire Borough Council and our Arts and Humanities funded Research project. He had made a Papier Mache lions head. What is he thinking now?
