Retinal kaleidoscope

Photoreceptor cells are responsible for vision. These cells can now be generated in vitro from stem cells. We envisage that one day it will be possible to repopulate the diseased eye with stem cell-derived photoreceptors to restore vision. This image shows stem cell-derived neuroepithelia generated in 3D cultures. Staining for various photoreceptor markers create the kaleidoscopic colour patterns.
