Mr Kevin Biderman, Anthropology
The Optical Unconscious of Anthropology
The pieces of work I would like to enter into this contest consist of a series of 'photographic' portraits which were taken using a scanner as a camera and a 'screenplay' which contextualize them. My main research aim was to investigate the relationship between Anthropology and photography and how both are used to order and document. Through these images I examine what happens when one creates an number of moments of exposure in one image. To this extent I question Anthropology's initial reliance on photography as hard evidence and the effect this may have had on the discipline itself. Through 'photographing' myself and my own family I also explore the relationship between the externalized 'other' and the researcher themselves. This work was completed as part of the Photography and Anthropology module run by Chris Pinney.
