Originally designed as an occasion for warring nomadic tribes to negotiate complex land rights, the Loiyangalani Dances have become attractive subjects for politicians and photographers alike. Following the discovery of oil in the territory last year, the meanings of the dances are set to change yet again. This photograph shows a Samburu girl and Reuters journalist far closer than a Samburu man would be allowed.
